These three country songs tell rich, eerie stories. By the time these tracks end, you’ll be impressed and creeped out.
“El Paso” by Marty Robbins
Marty Robbins’ “El Paso” is a robust song. Few songs pack as much into a few verses as this one does. The listener follows an entire arc and leaves with an eerie feeling in their bones. “Out in the West Texas town of El Paso / I fell in love with a Mexican girl / Nighttime would find me in Rosa’s cantina / Music would play, and Felina would whirl,” the scene-setting lyrics read. As this tale unfolds, we get a love story, gunfights, and no shortage of drama.
This track is full of twists and turns like a great film that you can revisit anytime you press play. Despite this country song’s short runtime, your mind explodes with visuals of this love story gone awry.
“Midnight In Montgomery” by Alan Jackson
“Midnight in Montgomery / Silver eagle, lonely Road / Was on my way to Mobile / For a big New Year’s Eve show / And stopped for just a minute / To see a friend outside of town / With my collar up, I found his name / And felt the wind die down,” the lyrics to Alan Jackson’s “Midnight In Montgomery” read.
This ghost story is a country music legend. Jackson’s character sneaks off to a cemetery and is confronted with the ghost of Hank Williams Sr. “He said, ‘Friend, it’s good to see you / It’s nice to know you care’ / Then the wind picked up, he was gone / Was he ever really there,” the lyrics continue, telling a rich story that’ll send a chill up your spine.
“The Legend Of Wooley Swamp” by The Charlie Daniels Band
“Well, if you ever go back into Wooley Swamp, well, you better not go at night / There’s things out / there in the middle of them woods that’d make a strong man die from fright / Things that crawl / and things that fly and things that creep around on the ground / And they say the ghost of Lucius Clay gets up, and he walks around,” the lyrics to this Charlie Daniels Band song read. This supernatural tale of revenge is just as rich and well-rounded as a feature film.
Daniels had no shortage of storytelling songs. He’s one of the best at narrative country songs, and this track is no exception.
