The 1980s saw a massive influx of arena rock to the most mainstream avenues of the genre, with bands like Journey and REO Speedwagon leading the way with their expansive and powerful music. This intensity makes this era of rock ‘n’ roll some of the most goosebump-inducing, and these four songs from 1981 are no exception.
“Juke Box Hero” by Foreigner
With a voice like Lou Gramm’s at their disposal, there’s no way Foreigner was going to miss an opportunity to get a little power ballad-y. And indeed, the British-American rock ‘n’ rollers had no shortage of intense, cinematic, and impassioned rock cuts to choose from. However, if we’re talking about my goosebumps specifically, the most chill-inducing track in their catalogue would be “Juke Box Hero”. The narrative is strong, the imagery is even stronger, and the meta-ness of a rock star singing about becoming a rock star makes this a track that will always give me chills, no matter what.
“Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey
Sure, “Don’t Stop Believin’” is a little cheesy at this point. As someone who was a self-professed Gleek when Glee first came out, I can appreciate how people have become burnt out on this Journey classic as much as the next guy. Nevertheless, Journey’s 1981 hit is one of their most famous songs for a reason. Maybe it’s the small-towner in me, but the empowering, hopeful nature of “Don’t Stop Believin’” is simply too good to ignore. Sometimes, we all need friendly reminders that we ought to be holding “onto that fee-ee-ling,” you know?
“In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins
Phil Collins’ 1981 hit “In The Air Tonight” is a masterclass in building dynamics. The moody introduction of this iconic track creates such overwhelming tension that when Collins finally comes in with that signature drum fill, the results are that much more goosebump-inducing. The best kind of rock ‘n’ roll plays with the idea of build-up and release, taking the listener on a journey that holds their attention and inevitably gets stuck in their head.
“Take It On The Run” by REO Speedwagon
REO Speedwagon’s “Take It On The Run” closes out this list of goosebump-inducing songs (for me). The classic arena rock track might not be the most obvious choice. But when the chorus drops down into that minor chord progression, I almost always get chills on my arms. The stark contrast from the melody of the verse lifts the song in a really incredible way. No matter how many times I listen, that part always gives me that thrilling, goosebumpy feeling.
